Comedy

  1. The removal of the most immediate meaning from a phrase means that the listener must assume an alternative – more obscure, possibly obscene or carrying innuendo. If the listener is unable to discover the ‘deeper’ meaning, they will assume it to be more obscure, probably obscene and carrying more innuendo: they will laugh to cover their ignorance.
  2. When the “comic” makes a connection between two unconnected objects (cf Tragedy [2]).
  3. Behaviour resulting from one’s essence.
